Have you ever wondered what your signature style is or if you even have a signature style? Well first things first, if you don’t think you have a signature style, you just haven't found it yet. Just like everyone has their own unique thumbprint, you have your own unique style. Let us help you uncover your signature style with a few simple questions and techniques that will help you discover just what’s been missing from your wardrobe and what needs to go.
Find A Style Icon
If you need a little inspiration to find your signature style, think of style icons who you admire. Once you’ve narrowed a few down (it’s almost impossible to just choose one) start searching Pinterest for pictures of your fashion icons in the outfits you love. Try to keep this search as simple and realistic as possible. Break down the outfits into the pieces or elements of the outfit. You can take it a step further by breaking down their outfits into categories like, classic, eclectic, boho, flirty, etc.
It also helps if one of your fashion icons has a similar body shape as you, this way you can get a relative idea of what pieces of clothing are most flattering for your height and shape.
Find What Works
Once you have an idea of what you want your style to reflect, it’s time to rummage through your closet. To make this simple, Amy Goodman the author of Wear This, Toss That suggests “Pull out the five things you would wear every day if no one was keeping track." Once you have pulled an item for shirts, pants, skirts, and dresses ask yourself the following questions:
- How would you describe the item?
- What does the piece reflect? Sophisticated? Eclectic? Boutique?
- Does the color play up your features?
- What parts of your body does it accentuate?
- What parts of your body does it de-emphasize?
- What type of fabric is it?
- Is it comfortable?
- What is the silhouette like?
Use your notes to help you find additional pieces to add to your wardrobe. Be careful of falling into a rut and buying “repeat offenders”. You only need one or two dark pants, not 20.
Find What Doesn’t Work
Just like you did with the first exercise take out five more items, however, these items should be your “mistakes” this includes clothing you’ve never worn or wish you’d never bought. Once you have at least five items pulled from your wardrobe, ask yourself these questions:
- Does this make you look frumpy? Silly?
- Do you feel uncomfortable wearing it?
- Do you have anywhere to wear this?
- Is it poor quality?
- Does the color diminish your complexion or emphasize the “wrong” features?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, get rid of the offending item immediately! This will make room for the clothing that looks good on you and represents the image you wish to present to the world. By taking list A and list B with you the next time you go shopping, you can see what things to avoid and mark a clear a path for the items that make up your signature boutique style.
Stay True To You
The most important piece of finding your signature style is staying true to you, in the present moment. You may have loved ruffles ten years ago, but now your style has evolved into modest boutique pieces. Go with what you’re feeling now and listen to your gut, if you need it in your wardrobe and it “ticks all the boxes”, get it!
